Human Resources-Newark strives to continuously provide all Rutgers-Newark employees opportunities to improve their personal and professional performance. We believe that an investment in our employees is an investment in the future of Rutgers-Newark. We encourage staff members to become life-long learners through a varied range of Professional Development courses. Human Resources Newark Workshops
- Defensive Driving
- HR-Newark offers the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course enabling students, faculty, and staff members to meet the University requirement to operate a University owned, leased or rented vehicle. This course is available to non-members of the Rutgers community at a cost of $20.00 per student. Those affiliated with the University can attend free of charge.
- Please bring a copy of your Drivers License to class.
- If operating a university owned, leased or rented vehicle you will be required to have completed a vision screening within the last six (6) months of the course date.
- Vision screening will not be provided on the day of the course. Students, faculty, and staff may contact the Newark Student Health Services at 973-353-5231 to schedule an eye exam.
- If you have had an eye exam within the last 6 months of the course date, please bring proof to class.
Point Reduction Program
The Rutgers Defensive Driving Course may be utilized for the reduction of 2 points from driving records for individuals with valid NJ drivers licenses. This applies to Motor Vehicle points only, not to insurance points. Individuals who participated in a point reduction course within the last five (5) years are ineligible for further point reduction credit.
COST
$35.00 non-refundable processing fee.
Fee must be paid by the employee in cash or by check on the day of the course.
Insurance Premium Reduction
Participants are also entitled to a 5% discount on their automobile insurance premium, for three years, at the time of renewal. The discount does not apply if the driver has accumulated 4 points in the past year. A copy of the course certificate must be presented to the insurance company in order to receive the discount. The insurance carrier will verify course participation through the NJ Division of Motor Vehicles.

- Harassment Training
- It is an understanding and appreciation of our differences that contribute to the realization of an academic, work and living environment free from harassment based on an individual’s race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, and marital or veteran status. Rutgers University is committed, through policy and practice, to a standard of conduct required of its students, faculty, and staff that will foster such an environment. In collaboration with University Human Resources, supervisory and non-supervisory harassment training is offered throughout the year on the Newark campus. In addition, see below for the link to the on-line harassment training also offered at the University.
- Internet Procurement (RIAS)
- The Internet Procurement (RIAS) system is the university’s online purchasing system. Classes are offered for those who “prepare” purchases and those who “approve” purchases
- Leadership Development Certificate Program
- The Leadership Development Certificate Program is designed to enhance new and existing supervisors' knowledge and expertise in three key areas: establishing you as a supervisor, managing employee performance, and creating a positive work environment. Five modules address a wide range of topics in each area. You will have the opportunity to work with other supervisors and representatives of the University Human Resources in a supportive environment to explore new ideas and approaches through large group interaction, case studies, small group discussion, and experiential activities.
Participants must attend all sessions in full. Module attendance is credited for those who complete the full day's events. The Leadership Development Certificate Program is scheduled to run over a one month period and concludes with Module V at which time a luncheon is held and certificates are presented to attendees. You MUST register for all five modules!
- New Employee Benefits Orientation
- New employees will receive information on the many benefits offered through the University. Health plans, tax savings plans, tuition remission, paid time off, and pension programs will be discussed. Please contact Carmen Santiago to enroll. carmens@newark.rutgers.edu
- New Employee Welcome
- The office of Human Resources - Newark presents on a quarterly basis a New Employee Welcome, designed to provide our newest staff members the opportunity to learn more about Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and more importantly about Rutgers - Newark
- Professional Development Certificate Program
- The Professional Development Certificate Program is designed to provide new non-supervisory Administrative Staff with an overview of HR-Newark, federal and university policies and procedures, and RU's identity. Four modules address a wide range of topics encompassing interpersonal, communication, and customer services skills. You will have the opportunity to work with other administrative staff and representatives of the University Human Resources in a supportive environment to explore new ideas and approaches through large group interaction, case studies, small group discussion, and experiential activities.
Participants must attend all sessions in full. Module attendance is credited for those who complete the full day's events. The Professional Development Certificate Program is scheduled to run over a one month period and concludes with Module IV at which time a luncheon is held and certificates are presented to attendees. You MUST register for all four modules!

- Supervisory Orientation
- This orientation serves as an overview of resources that will guide and orient a new supervisor to their role at the University. You will be provided with a framework of tools and resources needed to effectively manage your employees and departments. - Business Accounting Certificate
- The Business/Accounting Certificate Program offers staff the opportunity to earn a Business/Accounting Certificate or a Business/Accounting Supervisor Certificate. The program focuses on how to effectively conduct business in the university.
- Communicator Certificate Program
- This program supports professional development and enrichment and provides numerous opportunities for networking and sharing resources with colleagues. Presented by subject matter experts, the program ensures that employees responsible for promoting the university develop the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively:
- Understand the appropriate use of the Rutgers University identity and ensure consistent university messaging
- Develop and implement communication and marketing plans
- Identify, manage, and maximize the use of Rutgers communication resources
- Enhance technical skills

On-line Training
- Harassment Training
- The following online training will help you address problems that are often anything but clear-cut. It will also assist you in determining the difference between behavior that is friendly and behavior that constitutes harassment, and help you to prevent and resolve harassment incidents in your work area.
- Ethics Training
- In accordance with New Jersey statute, state employees are required to participate in training as part of the State of New Jersey Ethics Commission's program.
